Pluto moves on

One area of our chart is now a butterfly

Pluto is a slow moving planet. It takes him approximately 248 years to complete a full orbit around the Sun. Pluto spends 12 to 31 years in each zodiac sign. It stays the longest in Scorpio, and the shortest in Leo. On March 23rd of 2023, Pluto transitioned to Aquarius. It had been in the sign of Capricorn since January of 2008.

I remember the first time a friend told me about this transit. I was visiting my home country where I had not lived for a long time, and she said: “Pluto is moving to your sun sign for over a decade. Prepare yourself for a huge life change.” I remember feeling the magnitude of what was to come. She was absolutely right.

Pluto transits are no joke. I can hardly recognize my life after these 15 years with Pluto aspecting my natal sun, venus, jupiter, saturn, moon + my chart ruler mercury. There were moments when this gigantic transformation felt unbearable, but there was also the captivating force of change and an entrancing depth that kept everything moving towards metamorphosis.

I’ve had this long transit happening in my 5th house, which is associated with creativity, self-expression, romance, the beginning of relationships, sex, risk, hobbies, pleasure, and children. All of these areas underwent radical changes for me. It’s been the absolute journey of the caterpillar to the butterfly. The process had many demanding moments, but was marked by the intense beauty of miracles.

To give you a more clear idea, I’ve been in and out of the two longest lasting relationships in my life, I got married (aspect with Venus!), got divorced, grieved the death of a man I love, had 2 near death experiences myself, re-learned to walk after a car accident (aspect with Saturn!), expanded consciousness by direct exposure to death and via intentional forms, was forced to come back “home” (as Pluto left my 4th house of the home!), fell in love my country after living away for decades, started and ended several relationships, changed my attachment style, changed how I live relationships, explored sexuality and relationships with radical honesty and depth, decided not to have children, lived in eco-villages and spiritual communities (aspect to Jupiter in Cancer in the 11th!), had a guru, left my guru (aspect to Jupiter!), went back to my roots in Tibetan Buddhism, risked as much as possible, then released my love of risk (Pluto in the 5th!), got intimate with my unconscious, navigated past lives, started and ended a few non profits, co-ops, and companies, changed what I like in trivial & big ways, traveled around 100 countries, turned my hobbies into my profession, created my own way of doing psychotherapy, expanded my love of astrology to it being part of my work, brought my spiritual path to my work, creatively turned my 8 years of university into things I absolutely love to do professionally, and totally reinvented myself. My favorite result of this transit… is the depth of self love it brought me. A true Pluto journey of empowerment. Many rebirths and the sense of creating a new life.

Pluto transits can be felt more or less strongly depending on your own personal chart, on which aspects transiting Pluto makes to your natal planets and points, and on other transits and aspects present in your unique astrological charts. However, there is definitely one area of your chart that has been having this transit since January of 2008. This is where, if you did your work, your life feels like a butterfly, ready to flight in full beauty. There is another area which is about to start the journey of the caterpillar. That’s also where you can get the rewards from the transformation you just went through in the previous house. How much you transformed before determines how you feel in the new cocoon now.

Embrace depth

Pluto is deep. It wants you to do things differently. To step into your power. To explore yourself more deeply. To dive into Pluto territory, there is always a need to let go. In the area of your chart where Pluto is transiting, and in the areas of your chart affected by Pluto aspects, there are things asking for change. The more open you are to letting go of what no longer works for you, the deeper you are going to go in your process of self transformation. What are you holding on to that is blocking you from deep change?

Pluto also affects our fears. Don’t be afraid to stay with your fears. Feel them. Give them the attention they need. It gets cold and dark in Pluto. Fears can be scary. But they don’t go away if we hide. They tend to look bigger and stronger than they are in reality. Welcome them. Go through that scary path, and watch the magic happen as you stay present to them.

We are getting a preview now of how Pluto feels like in Aquarius, and in a new area of our chart. In June of 2023 Pluto is going to transition back into Capricorn and then moving back and forth. It’s only in 2024 that it will stay in Aquarius without coming back to Capricorn for another 200 something years. I suspect that if anything was left unresolved in Capricorn, it will come up asking for resolution in the summer.

Pluto calls for intense transformation and growth. It can be challenging, but it is also an opportunity to deepen our understanding of ourselves. Take its invitation to tap into our own inner potential. I suspect you will love the results.
