It’s the Darkest Days of the Year: What Seeds Do You Want to Nurture?

There Is Growth in the Darkness

In the Northern Hemisphere, where I live, as days shorten and the air turns crisp, nature enters a time of quietude and introspection. We are now in the darkest time of the year, when the nights stretch longer than the days. There is wisdom in this quiet season. During winter's rest, the ground calmly prepares for the vibrant spring ahead. In nature, matter decomposes into nourishment, enriching the earth with remnants of past seasons as food for the future. The forest floor cradles seeds soaking in rich humus, gathering the sustenance they need to sprout when the sun returns. This is the essential rhythm of nature. Without winter, spring would not bloom in its full glory. These darkest days call for quiet, rest, and slowness, inviting depth and inner growth, and are deeply rich with potential. This is a profoundly creative time. When a flower blooms in March, its vibrancy can be traced back to the winter season—to the days spent in darkness. It’s much the same with us humans.

Some prompts for reflection:

  • I find darkness intriguing because…

  • Something about my life that I’m ready to release to the compost pile so it turns into food for the future is…

  • Some ways in which I can nourish the seeds I have growing in the dark are…

  • Nature is always right, and winter is an essential part of its flow. The darkest days mark the entrance into winter. I align with nature and attune my inner life to winter by…

  • As I observe nature these days, I notice these changes happening:

  • Inwardly, I can mirror those changes by…

  • Can it be that a seed knows that it’s going to sprout? Maybe know that with time it will bloom? … Can you sense the seeds in your own life, soaking up the nourishment they need to sprout in their own time? What desires to bloom within you?
