Why travel to Bhutan?

Unveiling the path to inner transformation

I’ve been wanting to go to Bhutan since 2003

Why do I want to go? Because it is an enchanted far away kingdom in the high Himalayan mountains that is full of mystery and beauty. My eyes sparkle when I think of Bhutanese temples & its surrounding mountains, and the uniqueness of the culture makes me dream of new ways of living. On the way to my first trip to Tibet (in 2003) I met a Bhutanese man who told me about his special country, and I decided there and then that I wanted to go to Bhutan.

In 2006 I tried to go to Bhutan by land. I had been traveling with a group of other 4 solo backpackers who I met on the train to Darjeeling (one of them is now my ex-husband!!), and after hiking together in Sikkim for 2 weeks, we all decided to head to a part of old Bhutan which is now part of India. Back then you could sometimes cross that border into Bhutan and get to spend 3 days in the country without paying the daily tourist fee. All 5 of us were backpackers on 1-year long trips and we couldn’t afford to visit the country otherwise. So we really tried! But we were not allowed in. We did however spend some wonderful days in that beautiful area, exploring the different culture, and the unique temples. I remember the atmosphere in the temples vividly. I was again sure that one day I would go to Bhutan.

Then in 2016, when I was doing the Annapurna circuit for the second time, there was one day when I couldn’t stop thinking of Bhutan. It popped into my mind several times and in various ways and shapes - it felt very close and very alive. At the end of the day I went up a hill to reach a beautiful old temple and watch the sunset. In the temple I met a Bhutanese monk. He offered me gifts from Bhutan and told me old stories about the Himalayas. Again, I got that feeling of connection to the culture, and a pull to go to Bhutan.

After all of this, at last I planned a trip to take a group with me to Bhutan in 2020. But that’s the year when everyone’s plans changed. I decided to dedicate a lot of time during the lockdowns to improve my plan for the trip, read more about Bhutan, be in touch with my friends there, and think of more of the trip’s details.

Now it’s finally time to go! I will take my first group to Bhutan next October!! Only 4 months from now! Honestly… I can’t wait!!
